Work has started on the construction of a young peoples fitness centre at Longsight Adventure Playground. Funded by a £347,000 grant from Sport England’s ‘Active England’ programme the centre will be completed by the end of 2005. The centre will provide fitness and training facilities for young people using the various youth projects based at the adventure playground and will also offer drop in sessions to all young people in the area. It will be a particular benefit to young people attending the centre’s Youth Education Project (YEP), who currently have to travel to local gyms for PE sessions. YEP provides full time education for 35 year 10/11 students and PE is one of the five GCSEs which can be taken. The centre will also be developing vocational training opportunities for young people looking for a career in the leisure and fitness sector.
